BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE

Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero arrived in Washington DC on January 18 to meet with Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to try to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Argentina and the United States. The heavy snow in the capital city is said to have brought it to a standstill and the limited movement of traffic seems to create an uninviting atmosphere for the meeting where very little progress was likely to be made, according to Clarín. Argentina hopes that US President Joe Biden will be instrumental in helping our country and the International Monetary Fund come to terms to be able to renegotiate our debt but President Fernandez should know that his administration doesn’t make a good impression because it has repeatedly refused to recognize violations of human rights in Nicaragua, Venezuela and Cuba. It’ s important to be credible, both economically and politically speaking.
